Mālama ʻĀina

Native Hawaiians view plants, animals, and things of the natural world as family members and ancestors. Many of these were kinolau, the embodiment of gods. For example, the ōhia lehua tree is an expression of Pele, the goddess of volcanoes. You see it in the foreground of the video above.

Mālama ʻāina means to care for the land, the ʻāina . As residents of Hawaiʻi Island, we know that the ʻāina will outlive us. We endeavor to be stewards of this living sacred land. It is our kuleana- a responsibility and a privilege- to live sustainably and to repair and restore the environment.
